Oude Noorden
On my bike. In Rotterdam. On exploration. This time in Oude Noorden, ‘the old north’. This district was the first to explore upon arrival. Particularly, as it is the district our apartment can be found in. The district is a mix of pre-war streets, beautiful canals and squares. Shopping, eating and sleeping it all can be done there. However, before there was the buzz it primarily was a polder where mainly windmills characterized the place. Just after a prison was built along the Northern Canal in 1872 the construction of houses began. The old prison was in use from 1872 until 2013. At last, it functioned as a detention centre. Currently, it is under construction to be converted into apartments and a neighbourhood garden.
Furthermore, there are several shopping streets and we were never in need of anything. Next to the shops, restaurants and apartments, the Northern Canal, the Rotte and the Pijnackerplein bring some romanticism into the district. Along the Northern Canal, I did my morning walk in times of the lockdown, the Rotte was the beginning of my jogging route and the Pijnackerplein gave me a place to take a break. The Pijnackerplein is a square built in 1896, it has some beautiful French influences among which the music dome catches the eye immediately.
I will miss the district and our neighbourhood as it has really begun to feel like home.
Oude Noorden
Op mijn fiets. In Rotterdam. Op verkenning. Dit keer in het Oude Noorden. Deze wijk was de eerste die bij aankomst werd verkend. Vooral omdat het de wijk is waarin ons appartement zich bevindt. De wijk is een mix van vooroorlogse straten, mooie grachten en pleinen. Winkelen, eten en slapen, het kan er allemaal. Voordat er echter sprake was van buzz was het vooral een polder waar windmolens de plek kenmerkten. Net nadat in 1872 een gevangenis langs de Noordsingel werd gebouwd, begon de bouw van huizen. De oude gevangenis was in gebruik van 1872 tot 2013. Tot slot deed het dienst als een detentiecentrum. Momenteel wordt het verbouwd tot appartementen en een buurttuin.
Verder zijn er meerdere winkelstraten en zo kwamen we nooit iets te kort. Naast de winkels, restaurants en appartementen zorgen de Noordsingel, de Rotte en het Pijnackerplein voor wat romantiek in de wijk. Langs de Noordsingel maakte ik mijn ochtendwandeling in tijden van de Lockdown, de Rotte was het begin van mijn joggingroute en het Pijnackerplein gaf mij een plek om even te pauzeren. Het Pijnackerplein is een plein gebouwd in 1896, het heeft een aantal mooie Franse invloeden waaronder de muziekkoepel die meteen in het oog springt.
Ik zal de wijk en onze buurt missen omdat het zich echt als thuis begint te voelen.
