Noordereiland
On my bike. In Rotterdam. On exploration. This time on the Noordereiland. When crossing the Erasmus Bridge from the northern part of Rotterdam on your left-hand side there is a little island. This island is the neighbourhood Noordereiland. If you want to get to Noordereiland you either pass the Erasmus Bridge and walk along the Nieuwe Maas to the “Queens-Bridge” Koniginnenbrug or you cross the Willemsbrug which directly connects the northern part of the city with the island.
The island is mostly used as a residence by people working in arts. Therefore, it is also called the Montmartre on the Maas. Next to the Koniginnenbrug, there is the Koningshavenbrug, a former railway bridge colloquially known as De Hef. It was used by trains traversing the Breda-Rotterdam rail line. De Hef is no longer in use. It serves as an icon for the historical rail line. This is a rarity for the modernistic Rotterdam. Why? Because after the bombing in 1940 the city was built up almost from scratch and architects distributed the city into different functions. This means that everything without a practical function should not find its place in the city. However, the bridge De Hef, after it lost its function turned into an icon and didn’t get demolished. Its iconicity for modernity was especially communicated by a movie directed by Joris Ivens. (All learned in my history class thought by Paul van der Laar)
Besides the historical background, the island is a popular route for runners and admirers of the skyline of Rotterdam. (Including me)
Noordereiland
Op mijn fiets. In Rotterdam. Op verkenning. Dit keer op het Noordereiland. Kom je vanaf het noorden en passeer je de Erasmusbrug zie je aan je linkerkant een eiland liggen. Dit eiland is de het Noordereiland. Als je op het Noordereiland wilt komen, passeer je de Erasmusbrug en loop je langs de Nieuwe Maas naar de Koninginnenbrug of steek je over de Willemsbrug die het noordelijke deel van de stad direct met het eiland verbindt.
Het eiland wordt voornamelijk gebruikt als woonplaats door mensen die in de kunst werken. Daarom wordt het ook wel de Montmartre aan de Maas genoemd. Naast de Koniginnenbrug is er de Koningshavenbrug, een voormalige spoorbrug die in de volksmond bekend staat als De Hef. Het werd gebruikt door treinen die op de spoorlijn Breda-Rotterdam reden. De Hef wordt niet meer gebruikt. Het dient als icoon voor de historische spoorlijn. Dit is een zeldzaamheid voor het modernistische Rotterdam. Waarom? Omdat na de bombardementen in 1940 de stad vrijwel helemaal opnieuw was opgebouwd en architecten de stad in verschillende functies verdeelden. Dit betekent dat alles zonder praktische functie geen plaats mag (of mocht) vinden in de stad. Echter, de brug De Hef, nadat deze zijn functie verloor, werd een icoon en bleef op zijn plek. Zijn iconiciteit voor moderniteit werd vooral gecommuniceerd door een film geregisseerd door Joris Ivens. Zie de video hierboven. (Allemaal geleerd in mijn geschiedenisles, door Paul van der Laar)
Naast de historische achtergrond is het eiland een populaire route voor hardlopers en bewonderars van de skyline van Rotterdam.
