‘Head of the South’
On my bike. In Rotterdam. On exploration. This time on the Head of the South, Kop van Zuid. Passing the Koniginnenbrug (Queensbridge) from the Noordereiland or straight away the Erasmusbridge you are on the Kop van Zuid (Head of the South). This peninsula is famous for more than only the Hotel New York. Besides, the Hotel which houses the former headquarters of the Holland America Line there is stunning architecture, a museum, theatre, cafés as well as a cruise terminal.
But let’s start with the Hotel New York. The hotel can be found in a nostalgic building which has been built in 1901. It was the departure point for many Europeans searching for a new life overseas. The building survived the second world war bombing and housed the shipping line up until 1984. Almost 10 years later the Hotel New York opened its doors in May 1993. The Hotel and its two restaurants and terrace are a favourite of many Rotterdammers but also visitors from all over the world. The hotel can’t be directly seen from the Erasmus Bridge. However, what catches the eye immediately is the building called ‘De Rotterdam’.
De Rotterdam is conceived as the vertical city and accommodates offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, shops, restaurants and cafes. The most known architect behind this project is Rem Koolhaas, which is also the brain behind the architecture of the Kunsthal and Markthal in Rotterdam. But also, many more buildings all over the world including the CCTV Headquarters in China or the Casa da Música in Portugal. It is almost impossible to take a photo of the Erasmus Bridge from the north side of the Maas without also having De Rotterdam in the photo.
When you’re interested in the more cultural side of Kop van Zuid, there is the Dutch Photography museum, a cinema and jazz platform in the LantarenVenster and last but not least the Luxor Theater. The new theatre has opened in 2001 but knows a long history in the lives of Rotterdam. As the seventeenth but biggest cinema of the Netherlands, the (old) Luxor opens in 1917 in the centre of the city. It survives the bombardment but after several years of hosting many successful shows, the theatre is in need of a renovation. Today the new and the old Luxor theatre are a great place to enjoy beautiful musicals, shows and cabaret.

Kop van Zuid
Op mijn fiets. In Rotterdam. Op verkenning. Dit keer op Kop van Zuid.
Via de Koniginnenbrug (Queensbridge) vanaf het Noordereiland of meteen over de Erasmusbrug kom je op de Kop van Zuid. Dit schiereiland staat bekend om meer dan alleen het Hotel New York. Naast het hotel, dat het voormalige hoofdkantoor van de Holland America Line huisvestigde, vind je er indrukwekkende architectuur, een museum, theater, cafés en een cruiseterminal.
Maar laten we beginnen met het Hotel New York. Het hotel is gevestigd in een nostalgisch gebouw uit 1901. Het was het vertrekpunt voor veel Europeanen die op zoek waren naar een nieuw leven aan de andere kant van de oceaan. Het gebouw overleefde het bombardement in de Tweede Wereldoorlog en behoorde aan de scheepvaartlijn tot 1984. Bijna 10 jaar later opende het Hotel New York in mei 1993 zijn deuren. Het hotel, zijn twee restaurants en terras zijn favoriet van veel Rotterdammers maar ook bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Het hotel is niet direct te zien vanaf de Erasmusbrug. Wat echter meteen opvalt is het gebouw ‘De Rotterdam’.
De Rotterdam wordt opgevat als de verticale stad en biedt plaats aan kantoren, appartementen, een hotel, vergaderfaciliteiten, winkels, restaurants en cafés. De bekendste architect achter dit project is Rem Koolhaas, tevens het brein achter de architectuur van de Kunsthal en Markthal in Rotterdam. Maar ook veel meer gebouwen over de hele wereld, waaronder het CCTV-hoofdkantoor in China of het Casa da Música in Portugal. Een foto van de Erasmusbrug nemen vanaf de noordkant van de Maas lukt haast niet zonder ook De Rotterdam op de foto te hebben.
Als je geïnteresseerd bent in de meer culturele kant van Kop van Zuid, dan zijn er het Nederlands Fotomuseum, een bioscoop- en jazzpodium in het LantarenVenster en last but not least het Luxor Theater. Het nieuwe theater is in 2001 geopend maar kent een lange geschiedenis in het leven van Rotterdam. Als de zeventiende maar grootste bioscoop van Nederland opent het (oude) Luxor in 1917 in het centrum van de stad. Het overleeft het bombardement, maar na enkele jaren van vele succesvolle shows heeft het theater een renovatie nodig. Tegenwoordig zijn het nieuwe en het oude Luxor-theater een geweldige plek om te genieten van prachtige musicals, shows en cabaret.

Conclusie: Het oversteken van de prachtige Erasmusbrug is echt de moeite waard en moet door elke bezoeker van de stad worden gedaan.
