Delfshaven
On my bike. In Rotterdam. On exploration. This time in Delfshaven. Delfshaven is a district near the river ‘Maas’ and around 6’500 residents. It has a rich history which lead to some picturesque sights.
As the city Delft (20 km from Rotterdam) grove its own shipping traffic connection to the river Maas along the Overschie (another district in Rotterdam) in the 14th century, a port far from the city Delft was created.
An important figure during the Eighty Years’ war was Piet (Pieterszoon) Heyn. He succeeded as the first and the last in capturing a large part of a Spanish treasure fleet and a statue has been dedicated to him.
On another note, the Pilgrim-fathers and their arrival in 1620 lead to international fame of the district Delfshaven. In order to practice freely their religion, the Pilgrim-fathers settled in Leiden, the Netherlands. After their settlement the Pilgrim-fathers decided to travel to America in the interest to strengthen their community. Some argue that the celebration of Thanksgiving Day was introduced by the Pilgrim-fathers sharing their first harvest with the natives.
Up until 1886 Delfshaven was in the belonging of the city Delft. However, after the annulment of the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in 1792 the shipping industry declined and there were increasingly unemployed people. This led to the annexation of Delfshaven to Rotterdam in 1886. Rotterdam did this out of its own interest in urban growth.
Nowadays the district is a pleasant place to live and has many galleries and cute restaurants to offer (if it was not for corona). Definitely a place to visit when you are in Rotterdam.

Op mijn fiets. In Rotterdam. Op verkenning. Dit keer in Delfshaven. Delfshaven is een wijk nabij de rivier ‘de Maas’ en telt ongeveer 6.500 inwoners. Het heeft een rijke geschiedenis die tot enkele pittoreske bezienswaardigheden leidt.
Toen de stad Delft (20 km van Rotterdam) in de 14e eeuw een eigen scheepvaartverkeersverbinding tot de Maas langs de Overschie (een andere wijk in Rotterdam) groef, ontstond de haven ver van de stad Delft.
Een belangrijke figuur tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog was Piet (Pieterszoon) Heyn. Hij is er als eerste en laatste in geslaagd een groot deel van een Spaanse schatvloot te veroveren en daarom is een standbeeld aan hem opgedragen.
Aan de andere kant leiden de pelgrimsvaders en hun aankomst in 1620 tot internationale bekendheid van de wijk Delfshaven. Om hun religie vrij te kunnen beoefenen, vestigden de pelgrimsvaders zich in Leiden, Nederland. Na hun vestiging besloten de pelgrimsvaders om naar Amerika af te reizen om hun gemeenschap te versterken. Sommigen beweren dat de viering van Thanksgiving werd geïntroduceerd door de pelgrimsvaders die hun eerste oogst met de inboorlingen deelden.
Tot 1886 behoorde Delfshaven tot de gemeente Delft. Na de opheffing van de VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in 1792 nam de scheepvaart echter af en kwamen er steeds meer werklozen. Dit leidde in 1886 tot de annexatie van Delfshaven aan Rotterdam. Rotterdam deed dit uiteindelijk uit eigen belang voor expansie.
Tegenwoordig is de wijk een prettige plek om te wonen en heeft het veel galerijen en leuke eethuisjes te bieden (als corona er niet was). Absoluut een plek om te bezoeken als je in Rotterdam bent.
